April 2021: New Moon in Aries
Apr. 12th, 2021 09:21 amI want to try to simplify these New Moon charts. It's not clear to me that they provide the same kind of detailed information that an ingress chart does, since they cover such a short period of time. On the other hand, it may simply be that I don't know how to read them yet-- and that's quite likely, since I'm still experimenting with Mundane Astrology.
And there is another issue, which is that there may be a distinction between what is predicted in a mundane chart and what is reported on the news, because news in America is largely about narrative management. If the media companies decide to start reporting on shootings in order to push gun control legislation, how will this appear in the chart? A mass casualty event is an Eighth House event, but mass casualty events happen all the time-- what determines whether or not they will appear in a chart? It seems that a media obsession with a mass casualty event should actually be forecast by a malefic in the Third House of newspapers, not the Eighth House of death.
So there are some open questions about how lunation charts work. So I want to simplify my discussion of them, in order to limit the number of items we have to track over the next month.
Here is the New Moon chart for April of 2021. This chart is operative from April 11, 2021 to May 11, 2021, the day of the next New Moon. Let's take a look, and see what we can find.

For Lunations, for the time being, I'm going to take the following approach.
We'll look, first, at the Lunation Itself, its House and Sign placements, and aspects; next, the Ascendant, and its meaning; the Luminaries, considered individually; finally, any other major placements that stand out.
1. The Lunation.
This month's New Moon takes place in the sign of Aries, in the Fifth House. The New Moon is conjunct Mercury and Venus and sextile both Mars and Jupiter, the latter of which are trine one another.
All and all, this is a very good set of omens. The Fifth House rules children and child-bearing; early education; arts and entertainment; and the stock market. A New Moon in this house ought to be very favorable in all of these areas, especially if well-aspected, and this New Moon is very well aspected indeed.
In our particular situation, I would expect the following:
1. The mobile energy of Aries and the benefic energies of Venus and Jupiter suggest children returning to schools.
2. The same, as well as the involvement of Mercury suggest that we'll see at least one major new hit TV show or movie-- success for Hollywood.
3. This is going to be a very good month for Wall Street. Aries says buy; Jupiter and Mercury are both excellent omens as well. If you were planning on piling on the latest stock market craze, this is probably a good time to do so. The presence of the Sun, plus the rulers of the Tenth and Eleventh Houses here suggest that the government is going to be involved in inflating the bubble as much as possible. This is not financial advice-- Bubbles always pop, and Mercury's movement toward conjunction with the Sun tells us that much of the activity on Wall Street is based in delusion. But the bubble won't pop this month.
2. The Ascendant and Its Ruler
The Ascendant is in Scorpio, which means that this chart is ruled by Mars. Scorpio suggests that public health continues to be an issue, and it also suggests anger festering under the surface. On the other hand, Mars is very well dignified in this chart, being trine Jupiter and sextile Venus, the Moon and the Sun. He gains power from these and also from the simple fact that four other planets, including the Lunation, are in a sign he rules, thus granting him rulership over them all.
Mercury and Mars are also in mutual reception in this chart, meaning that each is in the sign ruled by the other. One rule for mutual reception is that each planet can be regarded as being in the position of the other planet-- either in addition to or instead of its actual position. If that's the case, Mars is very powerful indeed in this chart. He rules the chart as a whole, and he is in his own sign, conjunct the Lunation and sextile Saturn.
Mars suggests conflict, but also energy. I suspect that what this chart is talking about is a combination of the usual expansive energy of Springtime with the explosive energy of people who have been locked up for more than a year. All that energy is coming out over the course of this month. Will it come out in a positive way, or as conflict? That's the question. Considering Mars on his own, I'd suggest that his energy is going to be expressed in economic activity and baby-making. But if you instead give him Mercury's placement, a slightly different picture emerges. He is sextile Saturn, who is himself in the Third House of media and the internet, and conjunct the the Lunation, casting his shadow over it. The conjunction to the Lunation has a blinding effect on Mars himself, though, because of the Sun.
It may be that a badly reported (Mars combust) news story (Third House) of a death (Saturn) will lead to Mars expressing his power through a return to last year's rioting, abetted by Hollywood (Fifth House). I would be surprised if this was the case, though-- Saturn's beneficial aspect to Mars in this chart suggests that he will provide a stabilizing force to Mars's energy.
EDIT 4/13/21: Welp....
3. Other Items
The ongoing story this year is the square between Saturn and Uranus. That aspect should, over the course of the astrological year (that is, March 2021 to March 2022), contribute to tensions, violence, economic disruption and unrest. Will we see an inciting event this month? If so, I wouldn't expect it in the next two weeks. On the other hand, the Full Moon on April 26 is directly involved in the Saturn-Uranus square, as Uranus conjuncts the Sun and opposes the Moon, and Saturn squares both. After that, we may see something-- until then, enjoy the sunshine!

Lunation Charts and Ingress Charts
Date: 2021-05-08 08:27 am (UTC)Have you been following JMG's series on his SubscribeStar/Patreon on Mundane Astrology? It seems to me that the way you have been doing your lunation charts differs significantly from the method he gave in a recent post which covered the matter in brief. Now please correct me if I've misunderstood something-- my knowledge of astrology in any form whatsoever exists almost completely as a result of lurking on sites like yours and JMG's, not in any way from applied study or practice-- but it seemed to me that you are taking these lunation charts on their own terms; whereas if I understand JMG's recommended procedure, one casts the lunation chart primarily to compare it against the ingress chart of the period in which it lands, and check for relevant conjunctions and aspects, and divine meaning from any relationships that exist there.
Of course, surely there may be value in doing both.
And also, of course, I may not have the astrological understanding necessary to have (a) correctly understood JMG's given method, or (b) understood that you are already doing this.
Re: Lunation Charts and Ingress Charts
Date: 2021-05-08 09:50 pm (UTC)The thing to realize, though, is that I'm learning as I go. There isn't a lot out there on Lunation astrology-- at least, not the way I want to do it-- so I'm sort of winging it, using Raphael, HS Green, JMG, and whatever other scraps I can put together for guidance. The only way I know to learn astrology is to look at as many charts as you can and try to figure out what they mean.
Re: Lunation Charts and Ingress Charts
Date: 2021-05-09 03:41 am (UTC)About what JMG wrote, I gave it a moment's thought and decided that, in the same way that it would be ethical to share a short passage from a book for educational purposes, it is ok for me to share JMG's recent paywalled words on the subject in a comment here. If doing so makes you uncomfortable, please delete this comment with my blessings. I can repost sans the quote.
What JMG wrote on the subject was the following:
I read your comment as I woke up this morning, and perhaps due to still being half asleep and thus it being a good time to make unconscious connections, some interesting thoughts came to me regarding lunation charts.
(1) A lunation chart charts the cycles of the Moon in relation to the other planets, and so while an Solar Ingress chart tracks the course of events from the perspective of the Sun (and leadership), a Lunar "Ingress" chart will track the course of events from the perspective of the Moon (and the people "who can make their voices heard", aka who shine with the light that the Sun reflects off of them). I wonder if this may affect the interpretation of the chart.
(2) I realized that the Moon has "ingresses", which is to say, the four quarters of the moon, which are given symbolic importance in various magical and spiritual operations across the world. From this, a hypothesis occurs to me. It seems to me worth experimenting with the notion that similar rules may apply to Lunar charts as apply to Solar Ingress charts (an ingress chart in a cardinal sign only lasts 3 months, in mutable for 6 or until next Aries Ingress, in fixed for 12 or until next Aries), but timed to the phases of the moon. So with a moon chart, the New Moon corresponds to the Aries Ingress, and the sign that it appears in affects how long it applies for: cardinal signs last for one quarter, mutable for one half or until the next New Moon, and fixed until the next New Moon.
(3) *If* the previous two entries are in fact valid, then it seems to me that something similar could be done for reading from the symbolic perspectives of the other planets, timed for when they are conjunct the sun from the Earth’s perspective; and when there are conjunctions, squares, or oppositions between that conjunction and an important planet or cusp in the current Solar Ingress chart, it would predict something important would happen. Obviously, all of this is speculation; as for whether I will try it and see, first I feel I should study astrology a bit more— I haven’t even memorized the order of the signs yet! But perhaps I will, give me time. :-) Anyway, in the meantime, these thoughts came to me now, as a result of the comment I shared yesterday and your response, so I just thought I’d share them with you. I hope you find them of value!
Re: Lunation Charts and Ingress Charts
Date: 2021-05-12 01:20 pm (UTC)In general, I don't want to make a habit of posting items from behind paywalls-- just restate his points in your own words next time.
Another one of the issues re. JMG's work that you wouldn't know-- because I haven't mentioned it here or anywhere else-- is that I'm deliberately trying to separate myself from him. Not out of any specific disagreement or anything like that, but simply because I've been immersed in his writing for more than a decade, and I've realized that many of my thoughts are actually his thoughts. So I'm trying to open up some gaps between myself and him-- even if I turn out to be wrong, the world is better served by two different people working from similar principles that from JMG and a second-rate JMG clone.
As to your specific points-- that's all very interesting, and very plausible. The only way to find out if it works is going to be to test it, and that's going to mean looking at a lot of charts!
Re: Lunation Charts and Ingress Charts
Date: 2021-05-12 03:35 pm (UTC)The main reason I shared the quote was to get at that last bit, which casts doubt on the value of full moon charts-- that was what lit the fuse for the brainstorm about lunar quarters being ingresses. I would not have even considered the issue if you hadn't been posting these lunation charts. Please by all means try applying theory in practice if it appeals to you. If it turns out to have predictive value, that would be absolutely delightful.
Re: Lunation Charts and Ingress Charts
Date: 2021-05-12 03:39 pm (UTC)Then in that respect it's a blessing to be alive in the present moment, where casting a chart only takes a few clicks!
Rereading the thread, actually I think this is a partial lie. Self-justification can be slippery; it comes automatically and unconsciously. You made the reasonable request not to share paywalled text, and I came up with a justification beyond simply that I was interested in sharing it with you. Anyway, my apologies, and certainly I'll refrain from such in the future.
